House and Pet Sitters

p02Rent free living is just one of the advantages of House Sitting. You can select House Sitting jobs in a wide variety of locations, cities or towns, interstate or in your local suburb if there is a listing. The jobs can be short or long term with animals, plants and gardens to care for or very little responsibilities. It just depends on what the House Owner requires.

Why Australian House Sitter?

There are a number of other House Sitting sites on the internet but we feel that we can offer more value for money than most. Some of these sites charge for individual zones or areas within states and for different states which certainly greatly increases the cost particularly to the house sitter who may want to do House Sits in different locations or states.

What are the costs to me, the House Sitter?

Only $30.00 AU for full access to the website and this includes all areas within Australia. Click this link for our current membership costs

Why House Sit?

There are many good reasons why you may consider house sitting. Some are:-

  • Short or long term accommodation.
  • Rent free living.
  • Living in different areas and getting to know the region.
  • Saving accommodation costs when travelling.
  • You may be travelling and just needing a break from the rigors of being on the road.

What are my responsibilities?

Everything is negotiable and depends on what is discussed and agreed upon by you and the House Owner prior to doing the house sit. It is advisable to fully discuss what is required of you. You may be required to:-

  • Look after the owners pets, feed and exercise them, ensure they remain happy, healthy and cared for as per the owner's instructions.
  • Water lawns, gardens and plants. Mow the lawns, weed the garden and trim the plants etc. if and when required.
  • Collect the mail, put out the garbage and other normal household duties.
  • Ensure the property is kept neat, clean and tidy.
  • Check and get the owner's permission if you want other people in the house.

Do we get paid?

Again everything is negotiable. In most cases it is just a straight exchange of the house sitter looking after the house and pets for free accommodation. However, there could be sits where the sitter was required to do more than what would be reasonably expected and you could request some payment for these extras. Negotiation is the key to it all.

Does the house sitter pay rent to the homeowner?

Again everything is negotiable between you and the House Owner. Normally it is just a straight swap however there could be times when a House Owner may ask for some weekly payment from the house sitter. The house could be in very much sort after area or the length of time of the sit may warrant a small payment by the House Sitter. Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate.

What about gas, electricity and phone calls?

Generally the House Sitter pays for what they use but can again be subject to negotiation.

How do I contact House Owners?

Registered Sitters are able to access the owners email address and email them direct. House Owners can also contact you directly by searching for Sitters who have listed for their area.

How do I update my House Sitting listing or change personal details?

Login to your account, click on the “MY ACCOUNT” link, follow the instructions and then click 'Save changes' once you have added or changed your information.

How long does it take Australian House Sitter to reply to email enquiries?

We endeavor to reply to email enquiries within 24 hours but please allow 48 hours in busy periods.

Are all the Home Owner listings on Australian House Sitter active?

As far as Australian House Sitter is aware all the Home Owner adverts listings on our website are active and available BUT we do rely on the Home Owner to remove it when a suitable House Sitter is found or to edit it if things change. We do periodically remove listings that are still out of date.

What length of time are the House Sits?

House Sits can range in time from a few days to months or even years. It all depends on the House Owners circumstances.

I have no House Sitting experience. Is this a disadvantage?

No. We all had to start somewhere. House Owners are looking for someone to meet their needs and will consider people with no experience. A well written listing that is honest, interesting and different will help to overcome doubts that some Owners may have about hiring someone with no experience. Personal references and perhaps a current Police Check could be emailed to the House Owner for consideration.

How long does it take before I can contact the House Owner?

You will receive an email after you register and you will need to click on the confirmation link. Once you have done that you can login using your username and password.

Do I need an email address?

You do need to have an active email address to register and then to activate and edit your profile as well as contacting members.

Do I need a house sitting agreement?

agreement

We do recommend that some sort of agreement is made between you and the owner. Some people feel more secure with an agreement. Whatever has been discussed and agreed to can be set out so both the Sitter and the Owner know where they stand. We can provide a House Sitting Agreement that can be changed to suit your requirements.

How does the Australian House Sitter web site work?

All registered and current House Sitters profiles are searchable on our database. House Owners can search for the profiles of House Sitters listed for their area and can contact the House Sitter directly. Conversely, all registered House Sitters are able to contact directly any of the House Owners who have posted their details on the website. You must be registered before you are able to view contact details. Also please note that not all House Owners show their details on the website, preferring to contact the sitter directly themselves.
